Designing Scent the Way a Landscape Architect Designs a Garden

As a lifelong lover of plants and landscapes, I'm not surprised I found myself in a career designing outdoor spaces. I was always intrigued by why a thoughtfully designed outdoor room could feel so grounding and calming. It wasn't just visual harmony, it was also the olfactory expression of a space.

During my design process, I found myself visualizing how people would feel in a space. Clips of movies would unfold in my mind's eye. Once, I saw an elegant woman, full of laughter and life, easy in her own skin, strong but soft. That image inspired a plant palette of Cleveland and Hummingbird sage, an uplifting aroma paired with a whimsical yet sturdy form. Another time, I was designing the entryway to my courtyard. I chose star jasmine and a fig tree so that guests, upon entering, would feel grounded and calm.

The way I approach landscape design is much like the way I create fragrance. I begin by remembering a feeling, or a moment in time that made an impression on me. From there, my husband, a far more talented writer than I, writes a poem based on that impression. I then build a fragrance story from the poem we create together. So just as my gardens are designed, my scent profiles are built from feeling, drawn from my botanical knowledge from years of garden design.

Canyon at Midnight is an example of this. It was one of the first scents in our collection, inspired by an impromptu late night in our garden with dear friends, lots of laughter, Joni Mitchell playing in the background, a full moon overhead, and air just damp enough to hold every scent close. The warmth of the fire mingled with the dampness intensified the fragrance of everything around us, until it felt as if the plants themselves were part of the conversation. There are moments in life where we are in flow. This was one of those.

Wishing you a weekend of flow, filled with connection to yourself, to nature and the people you love.

xx,
Caroline
